Description
Inscribed "July 25th, 1829 / Ja. Loose" (identified with Jacob Loose, 1743-1830, a German immigrant who served as a Private in John Patton's Battalion, formed in August, 1776) also with small engraved vine and flower and heart; thinned cow's horn with wooden butt cap secured with brads and centering an iron staple; fitted with a horn stopper, 10 7/8 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, 1995. Previously in the collection of Dr. George McCauley, Hagerstown, Md., with his tag, dated 1903. Accompanied by copies of research materials.
