Description
Inscribed "IOSEPH BENNET :: HIS HORN 1762" (identified with Joseph Bennett, Lyme, Ct., 1745-1819, served on New York frontier in French and Indian War in the 3rd Ct. Regt., under Eleazar Fitch, Israel Putnam and Timothy Mather) engraved all around with various imagery, including a pair of entwined snakes, flying birds, three fish, and a flowering vine; cow's horn (shaved so thin as to be translucent) with wooden butt plug attached with copper brads, iron staple on butt, and a small hand-carved wooden stopper, 10 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, 1985. Reportedly previously owned by Devere Card, Ithaca, NY. Accompanied by copies of relevant research and documents.
