Description
Inscribed "D: St.: JOHN" (identified with David St. John, 1790-1873, of Norwalk, Ct.) further labeled "1813, 1814," "FORT HAMPTON," (a small battery on the Outer Banks of North Carolina) and "SLOOP INDEPENDANCE," (a ship of the line, launched in 1814) and engraved with a ship (presumably the Independence), a small cutter, three unidentified structures, masonic symbols and a field of stars; cow horn with carved spout and wooden plug, carved wooden butt cap with fill-hole and plug, secured with brads; and with a small brass measuring cup and brush, 7 5/8 in. L.
