Description
Comprising 1) a patriotic horn, inscribed, "MARTIN COX / 1850 / FIRST BAT. / ARKANSAS VOLS" (identified with Martin Cocke, born about 1827, a laborer from Saline Co., Arkansas) engraved with a heraldic eagle resting on military trophies; cow horn with wooden butt cap secured with copper rivets, with brass capstan style post and wire suspender; 7 7/8 in. L.; and 2) a miniature horn, engraved with initials, "A. D. H." and dated 1767, the opposite side with heraldic eagle perched on a cannon; cow horn tip, the butt with wooden cover secured with small nails, a small tack at center, 3 1/2 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. The first purchased at Harris Auction Galleries, Baltimore, Lot 172, May 6, 1990. Accompanied by copies of relevant research and documentation.
