[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 51 General Orders issued by the Union's War Department, 1865.
Union General Orders spanning 16 January 1865 through 28 May 1865 issued by Assistant Adjutant Generals William A. Nichols and Edward D. Townsend. All orders issued out of War Department, Washington, D.C. except for one issued War Department, Savannah, Georgia, each approx. 4 3/4 x 7 in. (conditions vary, most with toning and light soil, some with chipping, small holes, and/or appearing disbound).
General Orders, No. 22 reprints a report of the "Board appointed by the President of the United States to examine and correct the quotas of the several States and Districts, under the call for Volunteers of December 19, 1864..." and is signed in type by Abraham Lincoln. No. 36, a "Special order relative to the Joint Committee to investigate Indian Affairs," is inscribed in ink at top "Maj. C. Baird ... Washington D.C." Major Chambers Baird of Ripley, Ohio, was a Lincoln supporter and was appointed paymaster in the US Army in 1863. No. 85, relates to Prisoners of War, taking the oath of allegiance to the US, and furnishing the ex-prisoners transportation to their respective homes. No. 90, relates to the "Punishment of Guerillas," and states in part that "from and after the first day of June, 1865, any and all persons found in arms against the United States, or who may commit acts of hostility against it, east of the Mississippi River, will be regarded as guerillas, and punished with death."
