John A. Dix (July 24, 1798 - April 21, 1879), American Civil War Union Army general. Dix is known for the actions he took to prevent Maryland from seceding from the Union. Following the War Dix served as U.S. Minister to France, Governor of New York, and briefly as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.
