Description

Franklin Pierce 7pp ALS with Buchanan Content

Autograph Letter Signed, "Franklin Pierce", 7pp, on two bifold sheets of his blind-embossed personal stationery, 4.5" x 7", datelined "Rockingham House / Thursday Eveg", but after September 30, 1957 based on content. Includes complete transcription, pictured here. Expected mailing folds; light toning and scattered foxing; a bit of adhesive residue on blank page; else, in near fine condition.

Pierce writes to Sidney Webster, Esq., of Boston, Massachusetts, regarding the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Robbins Curtis (1809-1874) and the appointment of Curtis's successor. In part, "You have of course seen the announcement of the resignation of Judge Curtis -- I think it will take people by surprise and Mr. Buchanan will find it no easy task to fill the place satisfactorily to the profession and the court. It wd be natural for the president under ordinary circumstances to have his thoughts directed to Genl. Cushing on the score of his geographical social and political position...But Mr. B. will not appoint him. "

Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) was the 14th president of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. He was a northern Democrat who believed that the abolitionist movement was a fundamental threat to the nation's unity. He alienated anti-slavery groups by signing the Kansas-Nebraska Act and enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act. Conflict between the North and South continued after Pierce's presidency, and, after Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, Southern states seceded, resulting in the American Civil War.
