Dwight D. Eisenhower
[New Castle, PA), ca. 1953
Dwight Eisenhower Ltd. 2nd Ed. Pennsylvania Dutch Commemorative Birthday Plate, With Wink To Ending Korean War
Tableware
A limited second edition Castleton China (New Castle, Pennsylvania) souvenir plate commemorating the first birthday of 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) after being elected to the presidency, with a subtle double entendre allusion to Ike's Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, and his role in ending the Korean War. Near fine and apparently unused. 10.625" dia. The plate is stored in its original chipboard square covered box, printed on the exterior. Expected wear to the box including isolated scuffs and areas of surface loss, else good to very good, measuring 11" x 11" x 1."
The commemorative plate features a gilt-rimmed dove gray border, with a Pennsylvania Dutch-inspired folk art depiction of a pair of doves at the center surrounded by olive branches. Two banners, one reading "The President's First Birthday in the White House" at top, and one reading "14 October 1953" along the bottom, appear above Eisenhower's facsimile signature. The plate features a square-shaped backstamp associated with the limited second edition run offered for sale to the general public. The backstamp reads in part: "A Limited Edition. This plate commemorates President Eisenhower's first birthday in the White House. The Pennsylvania Dutch symbol of the intertwined doves signifies Love and Peace for which our President firmly stands…" With additional underglaze and overglaze serial number stamps also present verso.
Dwight D. Eisenhower celebrated his 63rd birthday at the White House on October 14, 1953. Although he was born in Texas, Eisenhower did have family connections to Pennsylvania; his family's German ancestors had immigrated there in the mid-18th century. After the presidency, the Eisenhowers would move to a farm near the battlefield at Gettysburg. The armistice ending the Korean War would be signed just six months after Ike took office, on July 27, 1953.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
