Receipt from auctioneer Stan V. Henkels, Jr. of Philadelphia, made out to then-Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt. 1p, measuring 6" x 9.5" (visible), dated February 24 [no year], Philadelphia, PA. The invoice obliges "Franklin Roosevelt/ Executive Mansion/ Albany, NY" two books won at auction- one on geography and the other on law- with high bids of $4.50 and $12.00, respectively. Exhibits mailing folds, light toning, and scattered soiling throughout; isolated paperclip staining at top middle edge. Otherwise, very good. Matted and displayed to an overall size of 10" x 14".
Accompanied by a 1932 "RISE WITH ROOSEVELT" metal campaign plate, measuring 11.75" x 4.5".
Well before Franklin Roosevelt was elected President, he garnered a reputation as a lover and collector of books. At the time of his death, he had amassed an impressive personal library which consisted of approximately 22,000 volumes. According to the FDR Library, "From an early age he gathered large collections of stamps, ship models, rare books, prints, coins, and drawings. By the time of his election as President, he had amassed one of the nation's finest collections of naval art and impressive collections of Hudson River Valley art and historical prints."
