Franklin D. Roosevelt White House China, Lenox Exhibit Service Plate
A Roosevelt White House (1933-1945) exhibit service plate, part of a special edition made by Lenox and used when presidential china is put on display. Beautiful cream color porcelain service plate features the Great Seal of the United States in full color at top, surrounded by a gilt rim and navy-blue border dotted with gilt stars. The famed Lenox official watermark is present to the underside, and reads, “The White House 1934 / American by Design / Made in the U.S.A. / Exhibit Collection for Lenox Corporation 2010". Measures 11.875'' in diameter. In near fine condition.
Lenox was first commissioned in March 1818 by President Woodrow Wilson to produce the first American made state service for the White House. All services in the past had been manufactured in either France or England. In November 1934, as a result of continued breakage of china, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt ordered a new Lenox set containing 1,722 pieces. The service made its debut on January 24, 1935, at the annual dinner given for the heads of diplomatic missions in Washington.
