Item Details

Description

Chinese, 1868

Grant’s monogram within a laurel wreath. From a unique service of 360 pieces ordered in 1868. Used by the family in the White House. Enclosed by four panels with groups of chinese figures interacting. With birds, insecrs, butterflies, floral branches and flowers. All against a gilt floral butterfly ground.

Provenance: Constantine (Gus) Sclavos (1896-1985) owner of Glasgow Arms restaurant, Glasgow, Delaware; to his daughter Mary (d.2020); thence by descent to the present owners

Literature: "Chinese Porcelain in America", Jean McClure Mudge, 1986, Clarkson H. Potter Inc., N.Y., p. 223

Dimensions: Diameter: 8 in.

Condition

First plate has abrasion and loses to gilt on surface of plate and at the rim. 1/2 in. by 1/4 in. chip from the rim and it's partially visible from exterior. Extending from that chip are two tiny discolored hairlines. 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. adjacent cracks.

The other is in almost perfect condition.
