Description
Teddy Roosevelt ALS as Historian and Writer
26th President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (1858-1919) Autograph Letter Signed, “Theodore Roosevelt”, 2pp on a bifold sheet of his personal stationery, 4.5” x 7”, New York, March 21, [1889 or 1895]. Expected folds, small hole at top left, minor discoloration, some dampstaining to the first page, show-through from a note by Campbell Brown on opposing page, else in Very Good condition.
The letter, datelined “Thursday Mar 21st”, was written when Roosevelt lived at 689 Madison Avenue and was the Commissioner of the United States Civil Service Commission (1889-1895). It would have either been 1889 or 1895, as they are the only years that March 21 landed on a Thursday during that period. It reads, in full, I send you herewith a letter of introduction from Dr. Polk. / I am very anxious to see if there are not some old mss [manuscripts], in the shape of diaries or private letters extant, relating to the early times in Tennessee; as I am engaged on a work on the subject. I shall be in Nashville by Sunday, and a note addressed to the care of Judge John M. Lea, would reach me. / Dr. Polk spoke as if possibly you yourself might be in Nashville next week. / Trusting you will excuse my thus taking up your time.”
Based on provenance included with the letter, Roosevelt appears to be researching and writing about the Confederate General Richard S. Ewell of Tennessee.
