Description

JFK ALS Discussing "...extremely left wing and very anti-Catholic" Attacks while Running for President.

Then Senator Kennedy writes to Massachusetts Senator and future Boston Mayor, John F. Collins to discuss an article "appearing in N.Y. Post - which is extremely left wing & very anti-Catholic." Boldly signed as "Jack" on the bottom right of the back page. Circa 1960, Washington D.C., written on United States Senate stationery. 1pp, 6.25" x 9.25", framed to an overall size of 12" x 15".  Expected folds, barely noticeable staining, else near fine. Accompanied by a full letter of authentication from PSA/DNA.

In full:

"Dear John:

Many thanks for your note. The article was one of three, all more or less unfriendly, appearing in N. Y. Post—which is extremely left-wing—& very anti-Catholic as you may have noticed; it has been my experience, and probably yours—that the only thing to do on these letters is to ignore them. Hope to see you both soon. My very best to your very exceptional wife.

Best,

Jack"

In 1960, Kennedy was faced with anti-Catholic attacks from democrats and the media while running for President. The then-candidate for President was referring to similar anti-Catholic articles at the time he famously stated to a Houston gathering of Southern Baptist clergy "Contrary to common newspaper usage, I am not the Catholic candidate for president, I am the Democratic Party's candidate for president, who happens also to be a Catholic." A few months later, John F. Kennedy was elected as the 35th President of the United States.

Provenance:

From the estate of former Boston Mayor John F. Collins.

The same letter sold for $5,525 last April in RR Auctions.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
