Wonderful Lincoln Family Log Cabin Late 19th Century Cabinet Card
Cabinet card, measuring 6.5" x 4.25", n.d., Farmington, IL. A sepia-toned photograph depicting the façade of the Lincoln family's log cabin, built in 1831 near Farmington, IL and farmstead of Thomas Lincoln. A dedication to Abraham Lincoln and oration from the Gettysburg Address found on verso. Bumped corners, with minor degrees of creasing, foxing, and soiling throughout. Does not take away from the overall appeal of the image. The condition is very good.
The two-room saddlebag-style log cabin, located in Coles County Illinois, built by Thomas and Sarah Lincoln shortly after a young Abraham went off on his own circa 1830. The then lawyer and state legislator Lincoln would sporadically visit the family home up until his father's death in 1851. In 1893, the cabin was dismantled and shipped to Chicago where it was to be displayed at the World's Columbian Exhibition. Sadly, it was later lost to time, possibly made into firewood following the Exhibition. Today, a replica of the farmstead, owned and operated by the State of Illinois, is listed on the National Register of Public Places.
