James Garfield Archive ft. Cabinet Photo & Post-Assassination Executive Mansion Card

A small archive relating to President James Garfield, including a 4.25" x 6.5" cabinet photograph by notable photographer Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896) and printed White House Card. The image, taken around August 6, 1880, shows a handsome Garfield weeks after he was named candidate at the Republican National Convention in July. The card, while a stamped replica, was likely produced by Garfield's Secretary J. Stanley Brown as a way to handle requests for the late President's autograph following his assassination. This particular card is accompanied by Lucretia Garfield's calling card and matching mourning envelope (postmarked October 30, 1881) addressed by the former first lady to the wife of General Lew Wallace, Civil War soldier and author of Ben-Hur (1880) who had recently been appointed U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire by the late President. Also included is a separate handwritten envelope, postmarked with the date of Garfield's death: September 19, 1881. Features expected wear, including scattered surface markings, toning, and creasing throughout. An interesting collection overall.

James A. Garfield (1831-1881) was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 1881 until his assassination in September 1881. A lawyer and Civil War general, Garfield served nine terms in the United States House of Representatives and is the only sitting member of the House to be elected president. Before his candidacy for the presidency, he had been elected to the U.S. Senate by the Ohio General Assembly- a position he declined when he became president-elect.
