A. Lincoln Photo, The Last The President Sat For
Photograph of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) with his son, Thomas “Tad” Lincoln (1853-1871), 6.25” x 8.25”, laid down to a mount measuring 7.5” x 12”. Titled at bottom margin of the mount, “President Lincoln and his son Thaddeus / The last Photograph the President sat for”, with publisher’s mark of “G. F. Bouve & Co., 41 Brattle Street, Boston”. Dampstaining to mount; minor edgewear to both photo and mount; some surface abrasions; overall, in near fine condition.
This image was captured by photographer Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) in 1865 and is said to be the last that President Lincoln sat for. Pictured is a bearded Abraham Lincoln, with book in hand, seated at a round table on which his son Thomas leans. Thomas was nicknamed "Tad" by his father because he wiggled like a tadpole as an infant; his first name has occasionally been erroneously recorded as Thaddeus.
