Description
Lincoln & Tad CDV with Miniature Image.
Carte De Visite of President Lincoln and his son Tad, Albany, NY. The photo was taken by Mathew Brady's assistant Anthony Berger and is in excellent condition. James Burton & Co. stamp on verso, minor toning, else fine. The overall photo measures 2.5" x 3.875" with the image measuring .5" x .75".
In this image taken February 9, 1864, Lincoln holds and views a photograph album with his son Tad looking on. After the photo was published, Lincoln feared that the public would view this pose as "a species of false pretense" because most viewers would assume the book was a large clasped Bible. When they learned that it was a photograph album, they might think Lincoln was "making believe read the Bible to Tad." Just as Lincoln feared, after his death, some versions were carefully retouched in order to make the album appear to be a large Bible.
