"Columbian Centinel" Publishes 3 Laws Approved on Washington's Last Day

4pp, measuring 12" x 19.5", Boston, dated April 22, 1797. An issue of the "Columbian Centinel", Vol. XXVII, No. 14, published by Benjamin Russell, Printer to the United States, for the Northern States. With multiple printed Laws of the United States, published by Authority of the 4th Congress, Second Session. Includes: "An Act repealing in Part, the 'Act concerning the Duties on Spirits distiled [sic] within the United States,' passed the eighth of May, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two; and imposing certain Duties on the capacity of Stills of a particular Description."; "An Act providing for certain Buoys, to be placed in and near the Harbour of Boston."; and "An Act to alter the Time for the next Meeting of Congress." All have been signed in print by President George Washington. The third and fourth pages of the paper are dedicated to advertisements and notices, including theater shows, house and building sales, advertisements for jobs on shipping vessels, goods for sale, etc. The paper also contains foreign reports and local news. The first page has been signed at the top margin "Hon Wm Cushing Esq." and dated "Ap. 22. '97." The newspaper has flattened folds, toning, and moderate foxing throughout. Bumped and chipped edges. Overall very good.

All three of these Acts of Congress were approved and signed into law by President George Washington on March 3, 1797, just one day prior to his leaving office. By the time they were printed in this newspaper, John Adams had been inaugurated as the second President of the United States.
