1948 “The Day of the State” Newspaper - Declaration of Israel's Independence
1p, measuring 17" x 23", Israel, dated May 14, 1948 - "the last day of foreign rule". Printed in Hebrew, a one-time joint issue of several Palestine and Israel newspapers, celebrating "Day of the State". The newspaper reports on the declaration of Israel's independence with the headline reading: "The People declare the State of Israel." Reading in part: "On November 29, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution requiring the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine - and by virtue of our natural and historical right, we hereby declare the establishment of a state in Israel." The Declaration of Independence is printed, alongside photographs of Herzl, Weizmann, Ben-Gurion and others, as well as a group photograph of the members of the first Provisional Government during their first session. Mounted and matted to the overall size of 23.5" x 29.5". With flattened folds and a few small tears at the edges and folds. A few spots of rubbing, wear, and soiling which affect a very minor part of the text. Overall very fine.
The Israeli Declaration of Independence was issued on May 14, 1948, by David Ben-Guiron, which declared the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel. The declaration was set to come into effect once the British Mandate for Palestine was terminated that day at midnight. This rare newspaper was published on behalf of Ben-Gurion, who asked local publishers to team together to create one joint publication. The name of this issue was "Yom-HaMedina", or the day of the state.
