1826 Deaths of John Adams & Thomas Jefferson Newspaper The Department of State's - U.S. Government Noted Copy
July 12, 1826-Dated Newspaper, COLUMBIAN CENTINEL Mourning Edition, Announcing the Deaths (on the same day!) of former Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, this being the Department of State's Copy, Complete, Very Fine.
This impressive historic Newspaper edition has Black Mourning Borders around all columns on all pages, in consequence of the announcement of the near-simultaneous Deaths of ex: Presidents Adams and Jefferson. Both Adams and Jefferson died on the Fourth of July, on July 4, 1826 just eight days before this publication appeared. All four pages are present, complete, measuring 21" x 14.75." At the top of the front page in rich brown ink is written, "DEPT. OF STATE" indicating that this paper once resided in the seat of power of the U.S. Government. Much of the front center top column and second pages is devoted to testimonials to the late Presidents and to the various 4th of July celebrations that were held around the country. Jefferson died at Monticello five hours earlier than Adams. The overall condition of this newspaper is excellent and far better than most with bold black printed text and borders. Irregular spine along the left side from when disbound from a volume, and where some light staining has occurred at the extreme bottom left edge. A very historic newspaper that one will be hard pressed to find in better condition.
