Description
Description: 11 star Confederate Guidon flag. Entirely handsewn and constructed from polished cotton. Stars are raw cut and appliqued to both sides with a basting stitch. Stripes are handsewn with flat felled seams. Flag dates circa the last half of the 19th century. It could possibly be Civil War era but could also date to as late as the 1890s for use among Civil War veteran reunions such as the United Confederate Veterans. Unframed. Flag was examined by noted vintage U.S. flag appraiser Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn and is accompanied by a letter dated 2009 attesting to his opinion confirming the stated age.
Exterior dimensions are approximately 11-3/8 x 16-3/4 inches.
Condition: Soiling and toning. Areas of fractured fabric along the hoist (staff) edge and also in the outer edges of the white stripe. Minor bleeding of the red stripes onto the adjacent border of the white stripe.
