Daniel D. Tompkins, NY Gov & Future Vice President, Signed Appointment
1p, measuring 16" x 10", Albany, New York, dated March 26, 1811. Signed "Daniel D. Tompkins" as Governor of New York. A partially-printed document appointing "James Livingston of Greenbush in our County of Rensselaer…an Inspector of Beef and Pork." Countersigned by Secretary Elisha Jenkins on April 4, 1811. A white paper seal has been adhered to the lower left. With docketing on verso. The document has flattened folds, with separations and small tears at the folds. Uneven bottom edge. Minor, uneven toning throughout. Large and bold signature.
Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825) graduated from Columbia College and went on to practice law in New York City. He served on the New York Supreme Court from 1804-to 1807 before becoming the state's fifth governor, serving from 1807 to 1817. Following his governorship, Tompkins became vice president of the United States under President James Monroe.
