Description

A. Johnson Signed Appointment for "gallant services" During Battle of Weldon RR

A signed military appointment by President Andrew Johnson, just one month after assuming presidency. 1p, measuring 13.5" x 17.25", Washington, D.C., dated May 23, 1865. A partially printed appointment document signed "Andrew Johnson" as President and countersigned "EM Stanton" as Secretary of War. The document appoints Madison Earle a Captain by Brevet "for gallant services during the operations on the Weldon Railroad." With a blue paper seal at the upper left. Patriotic motifs at the upper and lower margin. Docketing at the upper left corner. The document has been mounted to a thick board for stability. Flattened folds, light toning, and minor soiling throughout. Boldly signed by both men.

Madison Earle had enlisted as a Private in late 1862 but quickly rose in rank during the war. He was mustered into Company G of the U.S. Army 12th Infantry, which saw service at such key battles as the Second Battle of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Antietam. The above-mentioned operations refer to the Battle of the Weldon Railroad (also known as Globe Tavern and the Second Battle of the Weldon Railroad) which was fought from August 18–21, 1864. The battle was part of Grant's fourth offensive during the Petersburg Campaign and resulted in the capture of one of Lee's most vital supply lines.
