Lyndon Johnson Signed Photo Inscribed to Sculptor Leo Cherne
A large, 11" x 14" photograph depicting artist Leo Cherne carefully sculpting a bust modeled after President Lyndon B. Johnson, who sits facing forward at right. Inscribed below image on wide white border: "To Leo Cherne/ Very best/ LBJ". Exhibits slight ink fading, with moderate surface creasing along top edge and bottom right corner; minor tear at top right also present. Good to fair overall.
Leo Cherne (1912-1999) was a self-taught sculptor and economist whose notable subjects would include figures such as Elenore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Winston Churchill. Additionally, throughout his lengthy career as a public servant, Cherne would serve numerous Presidents as head of the International Rescue Committee, which was originally founded to aid victims of totalitarian regimes. Today, his artwork can be found displayed in the White House, the office of the C.I.A., and the Smithsonian Institution.
