Description
LBJ SP Presented to LA Mayor Sam Yorty, With JSA LOA

A vintage photograph signed and dedicated by sitting 36th U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973), as: "To Sam Yorty / with best regards / Lyndon B. Johnson" in black felt tip pen outside of the photo image along the bottom margin. Isolated minor pen smearing to the signature and inscription. Superficial wear to the photo surface including expected scuffs and wrinkles, with residual slightly adhesive mounting traces verso, else near fine. 10" x 8." Comes with a vintage press photo caption, later laminated, reading: "Mayor Sam Yorty meets with President Johnson at the White House, January 14, 1966. (White House Photo.)" Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication, certification number BB45642, dated June 2, 2020.

The photograph shows President Johnson meeting with Sam Yorty (1909-1998), a fellow Democrat who served three terms as Mayor of Los Angeles, from 1961-1973. Lyndon B. Johnson's presidential daily diary shows that the president met with Mayor Yorty on January 14, 1966 between 12:25 pm - 12:36 pm. The appointment description is listed in the White House daily diary as: "Off Record: Mayor of Los Angeles, California - Sam Yorty (appt. requested by the Mayor.)" Mayor Yorty's 11-minute-long meeting with President Johnson was just one of many appointments scheduled on January 14, 1966. After President Johnson breakfasted at 7:55 am, until officially retiring at 11:15 pm, LBJ met with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, Vice President Herbert Humphrey, and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain David Bruce, among many others. See attached photo of LBJ's daily diary included just for reference.

It is unknown what President Johnson and Mayor Yorty discussed at the January 14, 1966 meeting. Sam Yorty's tenure as Los Angeles Mayor was not without controversy. While he fulfilled campaign promises regarding expanding the growing city's freeway system and streamlining urban waste management, Yorty vocally opposed desegregation, feminism, and Communism. He dropped his Democratic Party affiliations and became a registered Republican in 1980.

Johnson served as president from Kennedy's assassination in November 1963 until Nixon took office in January 1969.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
