These are the original presidential phone call outlines and notes of major contemporary topics between each nation and the United States.Reagan’s correspondents were: Prime Minister Suzuki of Japan, Chancellor Helmut Schmidt of Germany, Prime Minister Arnaldo Forlani of Italy, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau of Canada, President Valery Giscard D’Estaing of France, and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of the United Kingdom. Most of the notes include brief phrases such as “Would like to meet possibly earlier than July Ec. Conf…” [Schmidt]; “…thanked our country for its help on earthquake, etc…” [Forlani]; and “She’s looking forward to visit…” [Thatcher.]Reagan’s notes about his call to Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki are much longer, and he signs with initials. In part: “…Call made – but did not have this [talking points document] with me so missed a few points. However, the call was made under great difficulties. I could hear the P.M. speaking in Japanese very clearly. The interpreter speaking the English translation was barely audible.
