Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. This is a large and lovely blue-on-white ceramic dish that is wheel-thrown, and hand painted with abstract phytomorphic motifs. The dish rests on a ring form foot that is pierced for suspension when not in use. The thick rim has a solid cobalt band, and the interior is slipped in a white glaze then overpainted with a stylized geometric and foliate pattern, reminiscent of a snowflake. At the center of the tondo is an 8-poinsted star with radiating leaves or feathers and scrolling flourishes and stippling. The Fez region is renowned for their Fassi pottery that uses cobalt blue pigments and bold patterns! Size: 14" Diameter x 3.25" H (35.6 cm x 8.3 cm)
