North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful wheel made Fassi type porcelain bowl for serving couscous. The wide bowl rests on a ring base that is pierced through the side for displaying the bowl when not in use. The upper exterior walls boast a blue-on-white zigzagging register. The main decoration, contained in the deep basin, consists of an intricate composition of cobalt hues creating spirals and geometric motifs on the contrasting white ground. The Fez region is renowned for their Fassi pottery that uses cobalt blue pigments and their blend of Islamic, Spanish, and tribal Berber patterns. This piece is gorgeous and has a modern wire through the foot for displaying. Size: 11.5" Diameter x 4.5" H (29.2 cm x 11.4 cm)
