Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful earthenware bowl known as a mokhfia, with lovely hand painted polychrome patterns. The bowl rests on a ring foot and the walls swell outward to from a shallow basin and wide rim. The exterior is painted with teal blue, cobalt, yellow, and black that creates four registers of scrolling foliate motifs that meet at the center. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. This is a large and lovely example! Size: 14" W x 3.75" H (35.6 cm x 9.5 cm)

Chips and surface abrasions to rim, interior basin, and exterior walls. Surface pits and glazing imperfections. Surface discoloration and some fading of pigments. Nice craquelure throughout. Base is pierced for displaying.
