Description
Northern Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) Region, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive pottery bowl presenting thick walls that swell out from a rounded bottom to a broad, flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form base. Adorned in hues of cobalt, marigold, seafoam green, and black on a white glaze ground, the beautiful vessel is skillfully hand-painted with stylized floral and geometric designs on the interior basin, all intricately filled with abstract, lattice, and dotted patterns. The rim is additionally embellished by vegetal motif border. A pair of perforations pierce the circular foot - one of which is strung with a modern metal wire - allowing the bowl to be suspended for display when not in use, while the base is inscribed with an Arabic inscription reading "Fez." Size: 13" Diameter x 3.4" H (33 cm x 8.6 cm)
