**First Time At Auction**
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. This is a beautiful wheel thrown ceramic bowl with an ornate and colorful Berber and Islamic style pattern in vibrant teal, cobalt, saffron yellow, maroon, and black. The wide rim contains a foliage vine pattern, and the shallow basin is slipped in an ivory white then painted with a balance of geometric and foliate inspired patterns. The center contains a rounded trefoil-esque or trillium flower - a popular shape found in Islamic architecture - with 3 spheres that contain scrolling foliate forms. The bowl rests on a ring base that is pieced for suspension when not in use as a serving vessel, doubling as both functional bowl and decorative art. Size: 14" Diameter x 3.5" H (35.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Losses and chips to rim and ring base. Surface abrasions and chips to interior of basin. Firing and glazing imperfections and pitting. Nice craquelure and bold colors.
