BIOGRAPHY:
Louis Kronberg was born in 1872 in Boston. He studied at the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase and at Boston's Museum School under Edmund Charles Tarbell and Frank Weston Benson. Kronberg won the Longfellow Traveling Scholarship at the Museum School, which sent him to France where he studied at the Academie Julien. While in Europe, he was taken by the paintings of Edgar Degas and began to paint his own works of theater performers, especially ballerinas. Upon his return from Europe, Kronberg became an important figure in the Cape Ann artists' colony. Later he moved to Palm Beach, Florida. The artist was an active member of many artists' associations, including the National Academy, Boston Art Club, Salmagundi Club, Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Copley Society, the Rockport Art Association, and more. In 1951 he was awarded the Chevalier Legion of Honor. His paintings are represented in collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and the Musee d'Orsay.
