Description
**First Time At Auction**
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th century CE. A beautiful Fassi style porcelain bowl with a ring foot and thick walls. The interior and exterior are painted with cobalt hues and geometric motifs on a white ground that wonderfully highlights the lovely blue color scheme. The interior has an intricate arrangement of circles, spirals, bands, and stippling as well as a notable 6-pointed star radiating from the center. These patterns are influenced by the cultural blend of Islamic tradition and Berber tribal symbols. The region of Fez is renowned for its handmade and glazed pottery, especially the blue and white wares that developed in the late 19th century known as Fassi, translates to "from Fez." The cobalt blue was likely inspired by the Chinese porcelain that was becoming more widely available at the time. This type of bowl was for couscous and the ring base is pierced for suspension to display on a wall when not in use. Size: 11" W x 3" H (27.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
