Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful Fassi style porcelain bowl with a ring foot and thick walls. The interior and exterior are painted with cobalt hues and geometric motifs on a white ground that wonderfully highlights the lovely blue color scheme. The interior has an intricate arrangement of circles, spirals, bands, and stippling. These patterns are influenced by the cultural blend of Islamic tradition and Berber tribal symbols. Fassi pottery is formed on wheels, then placed out to dry, fired, then painted. Once painted, the pieces are fired a second time to seal the glaze. The Fez the region that produces Fassi pottery, is renowned for its beautiful cobalt hues, which is indeed created by crushing cobalt stones. Size: 11.25" Diameter x 5" H (28.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
