North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous earthenware bowl known as a mokhfia, with a lovely, hand-glazed decorative program in vibrant hues of turquoise, marigold, violet, caramel, cobalt, and black atop a cream-colored ground. Sitting upon a ring-form base, the shallow dish presents thick walls that swell dramatically outward to a broad, circular rim. The interior of the elegant vessel is adorned with an elaborate design of complex vegetal and lattice motifs, while the rim boasts a beautifully minimalist striated pattern. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Note how this example features 2 piercings along with a strand of vegetal fiber and a modern metal wire both strung through. Size: 14.7" Diameter x 3" H (37.3 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
