North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a conical body and flared rim above a deep basin, all sitting upon a ring-form, pedestal foot. Adorned in hues of lemon, emerald, cobalt, navy, and black atop a cream-colored glaze, the interior of the elegant vessel is skillfully hand-painted with a stylized floral design containing crisscross, lattice, and geometric motifs on the basin, while the rim features a phytomorphic pattern resembling berries and branches. Alternatively, the exterior boasts a band of diagonal striations near the rim. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use - note how this example is tied with a fiber rope for suspension. Old repair to side with break line visible and metal wires from repair present. Losses to rim and interior of foot. Expected nicks, chips, pitting, and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, very nice with great preservation of pigments.
