Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. This is a beautiful and vibrant ceramic mokhfia bowl resting on a ring foot presenting thick walls that slope up to flared and broad rim. This large piece is enveloped in a pale green-yellow glaze with colorful geometric patterns of maroon, saffron yellow, cobalt, and teal that are all outlined in black to create a central diamond surrounded by circular and radiating symmetrical lines and stippling that cover the entire surface. Mokhfias are often for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use to show off the beautiful glazing. The base is signed in Arabic script for the name of the city, Fez. This is a large and lovely example of the traditional form! Size: 14.25" Diameter x 3.5" H (36.2 cm x 8.9 cm)
