North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large Fassi style pottery serving bowl, skillfully hand glazed with a stunning blue-on-white decorative program. Displaying a round bottom and curved walls that rise to a flared rim, the vessel rests on a ring-form foot with an annular drill hole and a modern vegetal fiber string which enabled the bowl to be hung and displayed when not in use. The exterior walls are mostly white, reserving the main decoration for the deep basin, which boasts the elaborate design of a stylized, 8-petalled flower with linear and dotted patterns, all encircled by a border of diagonal lines that envelops the rim. The Fez region is renowned for their Fassi pottery that uses cobalt blue pigments. Size: 14.6" Diameter x 4.3" H (37.1 cm x 10.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Small area of loss to rim. Stable hairline fissure from rim to center of basin, reenforced by old staple. Expected nicks, chips, and abrasions throughout as shown. Otherwise, very nice with impressive preservation of pigments and detail, as well as lovely patina.
