Northern Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) Region, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous pottery bowl presenting thick walls that swell out from a rounded bottom to a broad, flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form base. Adorned in hues of cobalt, turquoise, and black on a white glaze ground, the beautiful vessel is skillfully hand-painted with the abstract image of flower formed from a central hexagon and 6 rondels on the interior basin, all filled with floral and geometric motifs and surrounded by phytomorphic designs. The rim is additionally embellished by an undulating pattern. A pair of perforations pierce the circular foot allowing the bowl to be strung with a rope or wire and suspended for display when not in use. Size: 15.6" Diameter x 4.2" H (39.6 cm x 10.7 cm)
