Description
**First Time At Auction**

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a rounded bottom and thick walls that rise to a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Adorned in hues of cobalt, lemon yellow, and seafoam green atop a white glaze ground, the elegant dish is skillfully hand-painted to feature the tondo of a floral motif at the center surrounded by several trapezoids, all filled with intricate geometric, lattice, polka dot, and vegetal patterns. Linear decoration additionally embellishes the rim, while the exterior is coated in a lustrous glaze of creamy white. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. A fiber rope is tied to the foot of this example for suspension. Size: 13.1" Diameter x 3.5" H (33.3 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
