Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a rounded bottom and thick walls that rise to a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Adorned in hues of navy, marigold, emerald, teal, and black atop a creamy beige glaze ground, the interior of the elegant dish is skillfully hand-painted to feature a large, 6-petalled flower, filled and surrounded by intricate geometric, phytomorphic, and linear patterns. Alternatively, the exterior is coated in a lustrous glaze of cream-hued glaze, naturally embellished by beautiful craquelure. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 11.3" Diameter x 3.4" H (28.7 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
