Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A splendid pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a ring-form foot, curved walls, and a flared rim above a shallow basin, all adorned in brilliant hues of teal, viridian, aubergine, cobalt, glaucous, and black atop a cream-colored ground. The interior of the stunning dish is impressively hand-painted with an abstract floral design surrounded by intricate, interwoven vegetal and phytomorphic motifs. A stylized linear pattern additionally embellishes the rim. Alternatively, the exterior of the vessel exhibits a plain, cream-toned glaze, naturally embellished by areas of lovely craquelure. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 15.2" Diameter x 3.8" H (38.6 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Chipping and losses to rim and foot. Pitting to interior. Nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with lovely remaining pigments and nice craquelure to glaze. Modern metal wire strung through drill hole on foot so bowl can be suspended for display.
