Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. This is a fine large ceramic lidded jar or tureen known as a jobbana, with a white underglaze that extends to the interior, while the exterior is adorned with linear motifs in cobalt, saffron yellow, green, and orange-red. The body is essentially a large bowl on a ring base and a thick wall that rises up to a rim, with a matching domed lid topped with a finial knob, that contains an interior lip that fits flush into the bowl. The jobbana vessels were traditionally used for churning milk, but later became serving containers for soup, especially during celebrations and serving guests and family at Ramadan. The base is marked with Arabic script for "Fez." Size: 8.75" Diameter x 11" H (22.2 cm x 27.9 cm)
