Excellent Mint State George Washington Inaugural Button
(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, "Eagle and Star" Type, Brass, Albert WI-12C, Variety, Significant Design Elements Repeated Incuse on the Reverse, With Its Original Shank, Gem Mint State.
Very rare unimprovable Mint State condition. 35 mm. This variety has 63 incuse dots or indentations forming the outer border. Within this is another border of extremely fine denticles (incuse lines). This extraordinary Washington Inaugural Button has significant details of the obverse design clearly seen repeated upon the reverse, in mirror image. This resulted when the incuse obverse design was struck with so much force that it caused a mirror-image raised design to appear on the reverse. Albert does not mention this feature in his catalog, and there was no example of this variety in Stack's January 21, 2003 sale of the historic Cobb Collection of Washington Inaugural Buttons. This historic Button has an original uniform natural light yellow-gold brass color with its original shank fully intact on the similarly brass color back. Unlisted for its remarkable reverse side designs and with superb eye appeal for display.
