"Long Live The President" With "GW" In Block Letters
(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, "Long Live The President" with "GW" in Block Letters, Albert WI-11A, with Shank, Very Fine.
34 mm. This Washington Inaugural Button has both inscriptions in raised letters within a recess. Central "GW" initials in block letters close together, compared to 11B and 11C varieties. Within both inscription recesses, the background space has a faint pebble surface instead of being smooth as made. This "Long Live The President" button is in pleasing condition toned medium chocolate-brown in color. A few very small patches of deep green patina at the edges does not detract. Its original shank on back is intact yet has been pressed down to partially flat. Another example of this "GW" Inaugural button in choice condition, sold in the Stack's January 21, 2003 sale for $7,250 (hammer price). And an Extremely Fine quality example sold for $6,325 in the American Numismatics Rarities auction in March 2007. A nice collectable specimen.
