Description
Grant Ulysses
U.S. Grant Large Famous Bogardus Photo
Magnificent Ulysses S. Grant large albumen photograph by Abraham Bogardus. An unusually large late (circa 1880) photograph of Grant, post-presidency, in formal dress, sitting and in partial profile. Mounted on thick card with the mat border trimmed along the lower edge thus removing the photographer's credit and address, and with the photograph apparently trimmed along the top edge. Photograph with soft partial corner creasing, and a few faint scuffs, else fine condition. 10.25" x 13.25".
The photographer, Anthony Bogardus, was a photographic pioneer, described by the New York Times as “the best-known photographer in the United States”, who, in his prime, took “the first photographs of Gen. Grant, Gen. Hancock, Samuel D. Morse, inventor of the telegraph; Horace Greeley, Henry Ward Beecher and other equally well-known men.” The engravers Currier & Ives produced an engraving based on this photograph, calling it “the last and best taken of General Grant". This very large photograph also appears to have served as the model for a small carte de visite issued at the end of Grant's life. A stunning large image.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
