Description
U.S. Grant Boldly Signed Card as General
Autographed card, measuring 3.25" x 2", no place, ca. 1864-69. Likely taken from an autograph album, this card has been signed by the soon-to-be president as "U.S. Grant/ General". Features scattered soiling marks to edges and surface, not affecting text, with evidence of prior mounting on verso. Very good example overall- an incredibly contrasted signature!
Prior to becoming President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) would serve as Commanding General to the U.S. Army between 1864 and 1869. Following his victory over Robert E. Lee, Grant quickly became, to some, one of the most popular men in the country. In turn, as the Civil War came to an end, Commanding General Grant turned his attention to the Plains of the American West, where numerous conflicts were taking place between white settlers and the region's Native Americans that subsequently resulted in prolonged military involvement.
