Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $100**

New World, Guatemala, ca. 20th century CE. A striking wooden mask, brightly painted, showing a mustachioed face with a red fox perched on its forehead. Although the description sounds grotesque, the fox is charming, seated with its head slightly cocked as if it is looking down at the face. The fox is a common symbol in Guatemalan festival masks, and was thought of as a clever animal by their Maya ancestors. This particular mask was made to be used in a traditional dance and parade. Size: 7.5" W x 19.25" H (19 cm x 48.9 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
