Description
Latin America, Central America, Guatemala, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask depicting a man with a thick goatee, rectangular eyes, a slender nose, and a slight-parted mouth. The majority of the mask is painted in a chalky-white pigment, and black-painted details embellish his eyes, eye brows, facial hair, and the corners of his mouth. Four small peripheral perforations allow the mask to be worn or suspended. Guatemala has a long tradition of wooden folk art masks, used in dances and ceremonies held throughout the year. Size: 5.75" W x 8.5" H (14.6 cm x 21.6 cm).
