Central America, Guatemala, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A wonderful set of 3 hand-carved wooden festival masks depicting mustachioed men, perhaps representing characters from the "Dance of the Conquest." Each mask presents with hand-painted detailing in hues of red, pink, black, and golden yellow with elaborate coiffures replete with dozens of incised grooves. The eye holes of the masks were once filled with vestigial eyes, perhaps made from glass, and sight holes for the wearer are situated above along the brow. Size of largest: 7.25" W x 8.875" H (18.4 cm x 22.5 cm)
Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990

Condition
Original eyes from each mask are missing as shown with old adhesive residue around the interior sockets. Each mask has light abrasions and some smooth earthen deposits. Great preservation to pigment.
